Since starting Healthy Food in the 53212, a weekly show on Riverwest Radio, about 5 months ago, I’ve learned from many individuals and organizations about the state of community gardening in my neighborhood, a variety of models and features that make each one unique, and have discovered some of the challenges for growing food as part of a school horticulture program as well as some of the places where some degree of school gardening is happening. I have become more focused on the opportunities for children to learn and grow through participation in a school garden, as part of STEM curriculum, in preparation for the green economy, and for creating access to their own healthy, fresh, local food for themselves and their families and communities! I plan to continue this focus as I work with one of the recent guests on the show, LaDonna Green, horticulture educator and entrepreneur, who will be joining me in a workshop with MPS afterschool staff to teach them how to bring horticulture into their programs. Stay tuned for more on this!
