The trauma-informed movement has been spurred on by rapid advances in brain research findings, particularly in the last 5 years, and one of the most fascinating and instructive areas for afterschool workers has been in the field of emotion. For many years it was thought that emotions were fixed in our brains from birth, but recent findings have led to the understanding that emotions are constructed in part through our own active effort and the experiences produced from our immediate environment! This means that we can build new emotional neuronal pathways in children’s brains through modeling and creating powerful positive emotional experiences through activity design in our programs! Lisa Feldman Barrett has been at the forefront of this new wave of applied neuroscience of emotion as a researcher and spokesperson. Check out her book to learn more! QYDC incorporates this and other neuroscience research in its professional development services-contact me if you’d like to discuss how to bring this to your staff! -Quinn Wilder, qydc123@gmail.com
